PCR is a waste recycling product created by consumers. Before plastic waste is turned into resin, the plastic material is collected and sent through a proprietary process to produce plastic resin pellets.
From a scientific perspective, the use of recycled plastic (PCR) is more competitive in price, available, and has a positive impact than other options. For example, the carbon footprint of producing 100% PCR Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the same. The carbon footprint of water bottles is 60% lower than virgin PET (which includes all the energy required to collect, recycle, and make new plastic), which is higher than the carbon benefits of plant-based PET (such as Coke and Pepsi bottles) or bioplastics, for example. PLA PCR also reduces the use of virgin plastics, regardless of whether they are made from plants or petroleum. By using PCR, we eliminate the need to use new plastics, which is especially important given today's low recycling rates.
